Questions about chip repair

Straight answers about how repairs work, what can be fixed and who pays for it.

How long does a chip repair take?

Most repairs take about 30 minutes. The resin is cured on the spot, so you can usually drive away right after.

Which chips can be repaired?

Most chips, bullseyes and star breaks smaller than a quarter, and some short cracks. Damage directly in the driver’s line of sight, right at the edge of the glass, or a long running crack usually means a new windshield. The quickest way to know is to text a photo with a coin next to the chip.

Will the chip disappear?

A repair stops the chip from spreading and usually makes it much less noticeable. A faint mark often remains, which is normal.

Does insurance pay for it?

Chip repair usually falls under the comprehensive part of an auto policy, and many insurers waive the deductible for a repair because it saves them a replacement later. Policies differ, so we help you check yours before any work starts.

Do I need to bring the car somewhere?

No. Repairs are mobile. The technician comes to your home, office, hotel or rental.

Can it be done in the rain or cold?

The glass needs to be dry and not freezing. Technicians work around the weather and may reschedule or work under cover when it’s wet.

Should I cover the chip until it's fixed?

Yes. A piece of clear tape over the chip keeps dirt and water out, which helps the repair come out cleaner. Avoid car washes and blasting the defroster or AC straight at the glass.

What if it has already cracked?

Short cracks can sometimes be repaired. Longer cracks need a new windshield, and we can connect you with a technician who handles replacement and camera recalibration too.

Who actually does the repair?

Repair A Chip connects you with an independent, local auto glass technician. That technician is the business that performs and stands behind your repair.
