Will insurance pay for a windshield chip repair?

Often, yes. Chip repair usually falls under the comprehensive part of an auto policy, and many insurers waive the deductible for a repair because it saves them a full replacement later.

How coverage usually works

Glass damage from a rock or road debris is typically handled under comprehensive coverage, the part of a policy that covers things other than collisions, like theft, weather and falling objects.

  • Repairs and replacements are treated differently. Many insurers pay for a chip repair in full with no deductible, while a replacement usually means paying your deductible.
  • Liability-only policies generally don’t cover glass at all.
  • A repair claim is usually simple. Many insurers handle glass claims through a dedicated line and don’t treat a chip repair the way they treat an accident.
  • You can ask to use a local technician. Your insurer may suggest a glass company, but you can usually choose who does the work.

Every policy is different. Check yours, or call your insurer, before work starts. We’re happy to help you figure it out.

What to have ready

  • Your insurance company and policy number
  • Roughly when and where the chip happened
  • Your vehicle’s year, make and model
  • A photo of the chip with a coin next to it

If you don’t have comprehensive coverage

A chip repair is still far less than a new windshield. Ask the technician for a price when they confirm your appointment.
